What is THC?

As cannabis consumption is becoming more normalized, consumers are becoming more curious about their options. One common question that is always being asked and searched for is what tetrahydrocannabinol, better known as THC is. THC is one of the two prominent cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. The other prominent cannabinoid is CBD (which we will go over in another article). Both cannabis and hemp produce CBD and THC. THC is probably the most popular because it is the main psychoactive component of cannabis, and it’s the chemical compound responsible for the oh so good euphoric high.

THC? ... Cannabinoid? ... Whats a Cannabinoid?

You can’t understand THC unless you understand what Cannabinoid is first. Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Of over 480 different compounds present in the plant, only around 66 are termed cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant that interact with receptors in the brain and body to create various effects.

How Does THC Work?

In simple terms, THC works by binding to cannabinoid receptors concentrated in the brain and central nervous system to produce powerful effects.

What to Expect From a THC High?

THC effects everyone in different ways depending on how experienced the user is, and their tolerance level. Some people may experience a sense of calm and peace, while others may experience restlessness and anxiety. Be aware that some strains have a higher concentration of THC, which can also change the outcome of how someone feels. If you are unsure of the outcomes, always read the labels on the cannabis products, or consult a budtender to find out your best option. Always remember the old saying, “start low and go slow.” You may need to experiment with a few different products before you find the product and dose that works best for you.
